Your “go-to” sleeping position might feel perfect, but it could be the source of your waking aches and pains. A spine alignment specialist has identified two common sleeping postures that can cause significant harm to your spine. The expert stressed that sleep is a critical period for the body’s repair processes, but a poor posture can put uneven pressure on your vertebrae and nerves, effectively stopping recovery in its tracks.

The specialist warned that this is not just a temporary issue. Continuing to sleep in a misaligned posture for years can lead to chronic back and neck pain and even a permanent posture imbalance. The first position to be strongly avoided is sleeping on your stomach. The expert described this as one of the most common “bad” positions, as it forces you to twist your neck to one side for an extended period.

This sustained neck rotation, the specialist explained, can severely strain neck muscles and compress the nerves running down your cervical spine. This is why many stomach sleepers complain of neck stiffness or tingling in their arms. Furthermore, this “unnatural” position causes the lower back to arch excessively, placing undue stress on the lumbar region, which can lead to chronic lower back pain.

The second posture to be cautious of is the tightly curled-up fetal position. While it may feel “cozy,” the specialist noted that tucking your knees tightly to your chest causes the spine to round too much. This over-stretches the back muscles, tightens the hip flexors, and restricts deep, diaphragmatic breathing. Over time, this can lead to decreased flexibility and persistent mid-back pain.

The best way to sleep, according to the expert, is to maintain the spine’s natural alignment. He recommends lying on your back with a small pillow under your knees, or on your side with a supportive pillow between your legs. These neutral positions distribute body weight evenly, prevent strain, and allow you to wake up feeling genuinely refreshed and pain-free.
