In a significant escalation of hostilities, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have taken responsibility for a missile and drone assault on a Saudi Arabian military base located in the southern region of the kingdom. This attack comes amid growing clashes with Yemeni government forces, which have intensified, causing a surge in civilian displacement. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the assault specifically targeted weapons depots and command-and-control centers at the Sharurah military base. Meanwhile, Saudi civil defense authorities confirmed that a projectile struck near the Yemeni border, resulting in injuries to two individuals and damage to a mosque and several buildings.
The Yemeni government forces responded by ramping up their own offensives against Houthi positions. According to military reports, three airstrikes were conducted in the Taiz region, focusing on Houthi locations and weaponry near the Red Sea port city of Mocha. These confrontations follow a recent week-long offensive by the Houthis, during which they captured significant portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and several strategic islands, bolstering their control near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime route at the southern entrance of the Red Sea.
The Houthis have also declared a maritime blockade targeting Saudi Red Sea ports, which has raised alarm over potential disruptions to regional shipping and energy supplies. The significance of this waterway has grown for Saudi oil exports, especially amid ongoing disturbances around the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict continues to highlight the deep-seated tensions in the region, with Saudi Arabia backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis maintain their alignment with Iran.
This resurgence of conflict has precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of people being forced to flee their homes since the fighting intensified. The United Nations has recorded a sharp rise in displacement numbers since July, and recent reports indicate that the ongoing violence has resulted in more than 500 fatalities.
