The VNREDSat-1 satellite programme has served as a crucial stepping stone in the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the arena of space technology. This partnership is poised to advance, concentrating on the development of next-generation satellites, technology transfer, training, and enhancing domestic capabilities. Launched on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 stands as Vietnam’s pioneering Earth observation satellite and was operationally transferred in September of the same year. Remarkably, despite a projected lifespan of five years, the satellite continues to function effectively into 2026, marking its 14th year in service.
Beyond operational achievements, the programme has significantly contributed to Vietnam’s capabilities. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training empowered the engineers to independently address technical challenges, transitioning from relying on transferred procedures to innovating their own solutions. Furthermore, Vietnam has developed a comprehensive remote-sensing system, which covers every aspect from imaging requests to data reception and distribution. Since 2020 alone, VNREDSat-1 has produced nearly 30,000 satellite images, aiding in environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic progress, and national security.
According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the programme has laid a pivotal technical and human resource groundwork for forthcoming satellite initiatives. However, he emphasized that achieving greater technological self-sufficiency will necessitate advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems. The aspiration is to progress from purchasing satellite systems to mastering technology and co-developing them, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and innovate future generations of satellite technology.
A new chapter of cooperation was inaugurated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to pursue long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. This partnership seeks to develop a next-generation Earth observation system and evaluate technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2. Future cooperation efforts are expected to emphasize Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications.
Opportunities for Vietnam to fortify its domestic expertise include areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition towards a model where Vietnamese experts can progressively design, operate, and eventually develop future satellite technologies independently, moving beyond mere acquisition to full technological mastery.
