Vietnam and the European Union are set to expand their strategic partnership by exploring maritime economic cooperation, focusing on ocean protection, maritime security, and sustainable development. This initiative was a key outcome of discussions between Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and European Council President António Costa during To Lam’s official visit to the EU.

During the talks, both leaders emphasized the significance of transforming existing commitments into practical projects that can bolster economic growth and improve living standards. To Lam highlighted the EU as a priority partner for Vietnam and urged for stronger trade, investment, and economic connectivity, particularly through the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.

The Vietnamese leader also addressed the EU’s warning regarding illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and called for the expeditious ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement. Costa, in response, reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to deepening economic ties with Vietnam. He pointed to initiatives like the Global Gateway, which supports sustainable infrastructure investment and energy transition, as crucial areas of collaboration.

Further discussions touched on enhancing cooperation in maritime safety, cybersecurity, crisis management, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. Both leaders expressed a mutual commitment to strengthening coordination through multilateral institutions and underscored the importance of adhering to the United Nations Charter, international law, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

A shared commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region was also highlighted, with both sides advocating for freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The EU reiterated its support for ASEAN centrality and acknowledged Vietnam’s pivotal role in enhancing relations between Europe and Southeast Asia.

The discussions reflect a growing momentum in Vietnam-EU relations, with both parties keen to enhance cooperation across maritime industries, sustainable investment, trade, and regional security. As both sides continue to build on this strategic partnership, the focus remains on creating tangible outcomes that benefit their economies and societies.
