Announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham during his address at the UN General Assembly in New York, the centre will coordinate efforts among security agencies, law enforcement, and various organizations to effectively detect, attribute, and disrupt information attacks. This move underscores the UK’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities in combating information warfare.
Burnham cited Russia as a primary actor in spreading disinformation through bots, fake websites, and falsified content, specifically mentioning attempts to meddle in the UK’s 2019 general election. The new centre will focus on not only countering these threats but also on bolstering public resilience against misleading online content and sophisticated deepfakes.
