Vietnam is set to deepen its strategic partnership with Azerbaijan, as reaffirmed by To Lam, the General Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee and President of Vietnam, during high-level talks in Hanoi with Azerbaijani presidential envoy Elchin Amirbayov. The discussions aimed at expanding cooperation to support development goals and contribute to regional and international peace and stability.
To Lam emphasized Azerbaijan’s historical support for Vietnam during its struggle for independence and subsequent national development. He noted the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership during his state visit to Azerbaijan in May 2025 as a significant milestone. The Vietnamese leader called for stronger political trust and the effective implementation of existing agreements to ensure practical cooperation that benefits both nations.
Amirbayov praised Vietnam’s rapid development and growing international standing, reaffirming Azerbaijan’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries. This relationship has been nurtured by former national leaders and maintained by successive generations. Both nations agreed to increase high-level exchanges, improve bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and encourage the involvement of government agencies, businesses, and local authorities.
Key areas identified for expanded cooperation include trade, investment, oil and gas, renewable energy, transport, logistics, science and technology, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. These areas are expected to bolster the ties between the two countries and support their mutual development goals.
The leaders also discussed enhancing coordination and mutual support at international organizations and multilateral forums, such as the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. They expressed a shared commitment to promoting global peace, stability, and cooperation.
During the meeting, Amirbayov conveyed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s greetings to To Lam, who extended an invitation for President Aliyev and his spouse to visit Vietnam, further solidifying the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
