VNREDSat-1 Enhances Vietnam-France Collaboration Through Advanced Space Technology

The VNREDSat-1 satellite initiative has been pivotal in strengthening the ties between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. With ambitions set on developing next-generation satellites, this collaboration is poised to enhance technology transfer, training, and Vietnam’s domestic capabilities. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 has been a cornerstone of Vietnam’s space endeavors, officially coming under Vietnam’s operation in September of the same year. Despite an initial lifespan of five years, the satellite remarkably remains active in 2026, marking its 14th year in orbit.

This program has not only advanced Vietnam’s satellite operations but also broadened the expertise of its engineers. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in France and Vietnam, gaining proficiency in system design, satellite management, and problem-solving. Over time, these engineers have transitioned from relying on transferred procedures to independently addressing technical issues, showcasing Vietnam’s growing self-reliance in space technology.

In addition to human resource development, Vietnam has established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that manages everything from imaging requests to satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images crucial for environmental and natural resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security activities.

According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the VNREDSat-1 program has laid a crucial technical and human-resource groundwork for future satellite initiatives. However, he emphasized that achieving greater technological independence necessitates further development in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.

In May 2025, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam, a new chapter of collaboration began. The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to pursue long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. This partnership focuses on a next-generation Earth observation system and potential technological paths for VNREDSat-2. Future collaboration aims to integrate Vietnamese expertise more deeply in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. By focusing on areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads, Vietnam seeks to transition from purchasing satellite systems to mastering co-development and technology, empowering its scientists and engineers to independently design and develop future satellite generations.
