Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone have pledged to strengthen the strategic partnership between their countries during a meeting in Vientiane on October 8. This meeting marked Hưng’s first official visit to Laos as Vietnam’s prime minister, underscoring the countries’ commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
The leaders emphasized the importance of translating diplomatic understanding into tangible results, highlighting progress in political relations, defense, security, and trade. They also recognized the significance of cooperation in education, transport, energy, and cultural exchanges, which are vital components of their longstanding friendship.
Both sides agreed to focus on implementing existing agreements, overcoming regulatory hurdles, and accelerating key economic projects to boost investment. The Vietnamese Prime Minister called on the Lao National Assembly to support policies that facilitate resource mobilization and create favorable conditions for businesses from both countries.
Additionally, they stressed the need for stronger collaboration between their national legislatures, including delegations’ exchanges and legislative experience sharing. This collaboration aims to enhance coordination at regional and international parliamentary forums.
Promoting people-to-people exchanges, particularly among younger generations, was identified as a priority. The leaders agreed on initiatives to raise awareness of their shared history and strengthen public understanding of their bilateral ties.
The meeting also covered preparations for the Vietnam–Laos and Laos–Vietnam Year of Solidarity, Friendship and Cohesion in 2027, which will commemorate the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.
Both leaders reaffirmed the strategic importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties amid changing regional and international conditions. They committed to continued coordination on development priorities and the implementation of agreements to deliver benefits to the people of both nations.
