Thailand’s ambitious push towards solar energy is poised to transform its energy landscape by reducing household electricity costs and nurturing a domestic clean-energy supply chain. Central to this effort is the country’s significant increase in solar panel imports, which surged by 88.7% year-on-year, reaching US$426.7 million in the first seven months of 2026. This rise is largely driven by imports from China, accounting for a staggering 99.3% of the total, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department.
The influx of solar panels is part of a broader strategy that includes a government-backed household solar installation programme. This initiative aims to provide subsidies of approximately THB50,000 per household, initially targeting one million households with a potential expansion to 1.5 million. By promoting both rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations, Thailand seeks not only to cut electricity costs for consumers but also to lay the groundwork for a sustainable energy future.
Thailand’s solar import data reveals that China is by far the largest supplier, with imports totaling US$423.9 million, marking a 107.1% increase from the same period last year. Other suppliers like Singapore and Hong Kong contribute minimally, each representing about 0.3% of Thailand’s solar panel import value. This dependency on Chinese imports underscores the importance of the Thai government’s plan to bolster domestic solar manufacturing capabilities.
To support the domestic solar industry, Thailand’s government is collaborating with various agencies, including the Ministry of Labour, to train workers in solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Furthermore, discussions with the Board of Investment are underway to consider reducing duties on production inputs that are not readily available within the country. These measures are designed to strengthen Thailand’s solar manufacturing sector and reduce reliance on imports.
