Vietnam and Laos have taken significant steps to bolster their 2026 cooperation plan, focusing on key sectors such as investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. During a mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, representatives from both nations evaluated their progress over the first eight months of the year and set strategic priorities for the remainder of 2026.
The economic partnership between Vietnam and Laos has seen notable growth. In the initial seven months of the year, Vietnamese enterprises launched 20 new investment projects in Laos, collectively valued at $638.3 million. Laos continues to be Vietnam’s largest international investment destination, hosting around 300 projects backed by Vietnamese investors, with a total investment exceeding $7 billion.
Bilateral trade between the two countries reached an estimated $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026. In addition to trade, Vietnam and Laos are progressing in other critical areas such as energy, transportation, construction, and infrastructure connectivity, which are central to their cooperative efforts.
Education and human resource development are also pivotal areas of collaboration. Vietnam has committed to providing 1,300 scholarships to Lao students for the year 2026 and has allocated $43 million in aid to Laos. This aid is part of a broader assistance program planned for 2026–2030, demonstrating Vietnam’s commitment to enhancing educational cooperation.
Both nations have agreed to enhance coordination on major projects, address investment challenges, and reinforce economic ties within the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. This commitment underscores their shared vision for a more integrated and prosperous regional community.
