In a significant move to bolster their Comprehensive Partnership, Vietnam and Switzerland have entered into new trade and technology initiatives following Swiss President Guy Parmelin’s official visit to Vietnam. Marking the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, the two nations have committed to enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, scientific research, digital finance, and sustainable development.
A cornerstone of this strengthened partnership is the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland. This agreement is expected to enhance market access, support business growth, and create more robust trade and investment opportunities once implemented.
The discussions between Vietnamese and Swiss leaders underscored the importance of deepening political dialogue and economic ties, with a focus on expanding interactions among government bodies, businesses, universities, and research organizations. Both countries are eager to increase bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and to encourage greater Swiss investments in sectors such as green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and workforce development.
Additionally, the partnership aims to foster joint research and technology transfer in key areas like biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy. This collaboration is poised to support innovation and facilitate the commercial application of research through cooperation among government institutions, universities, and businesses.
Vietnam also plans to enhance educational partnerships and exchanges, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research to benefit experts, researchers, and students. Both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable development, free trade, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order, expressing confidence that these collaborative efforts will contribute to economic growth and regional as well as global stability.
