Celebrating half a century of diplomatic ties, Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a pivotal advancement in their political, economic, and technological engagements. This development was underscored during the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, where both nations committed to enhancing their collaborative efforts across various sectors.
In a significant move, the two countries signed four key agreements focused on economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and the development of aviation. Additionally, they introduced a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan spanning from 2026 to 2031, which is set to broaden cooperation in numerous areas.
Security, defense, and the fight against transnational crimes, such as online scams and illegal fishing, have been identified as critical areas where Thailand and Vietnam aim to intensify their efforts. Furthermore, both nations are keen on bolstering economic ties to navigate global economic challenges and encourage private-sector growth. They have set their sights on increasing bilateral trade from its current level of approximately $22.1 billion to a target of $24 billion in the near future.
Technology and innovation are highlighted as essential avenues for collaboration, with plans to advance joint efforts in satellite technology, semiconductors, and agricultural biotechnology, among other emerging industries. The agreement also includes initiatives to enhance supply-chain integration, boost local economic connectivity, and foster green energy cooperation, all aimed at fortifying regional competitiveness and energy security.
President Tô Lâm reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to strengthening its bonds with Thailand, emphasizing a mutual commitment to fostering peace, stability, and sustainable development throughout Southeast Asia.
