During a visit to Brunei to celebrate Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s 80th birthday, Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the Sultan reaffirmed their dedication to bolstering bilateral relations. The leaders underscored significant upcoming anniversaries, such as the 50th anniversary of their defence partnership in 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027. These milestones provide a framework for further enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

In their discussions, Minister Lee and Sultan Bolkiah explored avenues for expanding collaboration in various critical sectors. Energy, food security, and supply chain resilience emerged as key areas of focus, alongside efforts to increase people-to-people exchanges. These discussions reflect a shared commitment to addressing contemporary challenges while strengthening the longstanding ties between Singapore and Brunei.

Minister Lee’s visit also included meetings with Brunei’s Crown Prince and senior ministers, where they deliberated on initiatives to strengthen connections between future leaders and youth from both countries. The visit was marked by Minister Lee’s participation in official birthday celebrations, underscoring the close ties between the two countries. Additionally, he took the opportunity to visit Singapore Armed Forces personnel undergoing training in Brunei, reinforcing the defence cooperation between the nations. Lee also visited a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, showcasing the collaborative efforts in the agricultural sector.
