Thailand’s exporters may soon see improved market access and more stable tariff conditions as the country intensifies its trade negotiations with the United States. The push for a reciprocal trade agreement, known as the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART), is aimed at shielding Thai exports from potential tariff hikes and aligning them with the treatment given to regional competitors like Malaysia and Indonesia.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is expected to discuss these trade negotiations with US President Donald Trump, as Thailand currently faces a 12.5% tariff under the US Section 301 measure due to concerns over forced labor. Moreover, an ongoing US investigation into excess production capacity could lead to additional tariffs on Thai products, prompting Thailand to submit data countering these concerns. Thai officials argue that the actual production capacity in key industries is higher than US estimates, seeking to update Washington’s assessment.
The ART would not only address tariff issues but also tackle broader trade barriers, investment concerns, and access to Thailand’s market. While negotiations continue without a fixed deadline, Thai officials are aiming for terms that enhance certainty for exporters and align with regional standards. However, any agreement reached will still need to pass through Thailand’s domestic approval processes before it can be implemented.
