Vietnam and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) are set to deepen their collaborative efforts as both Hà Nội and Ho Chi Minh City build stronger ties with Canberra. This development follows a recent dialogue between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. Ambassador Tâm, looking ahead to Barr’s forthcoming visit to Hà Nội and Ho Chi Minh City, expressed optimism that the trip would pave the way for new collaborative ventures.
Ambassador Tâm underscored the potential for partnerships in several key areas, including renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development. He suggested the establishment of a friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT to bolster enduring collaboration across these sectors. Such an agreement would serve as a solid foundation for long-term partnerships, enhancing mutual growth and development.
Chief Minister Barr, preparing for his inaugural visit to Vietnam, identified the country as a priority economic partner under the ACT’s international engagement strategy. He found the proposal for a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội appealing, recognizing the substantial opportunities for cooperation in green transitions, electric transport, and renewable energy projects. These initiatives align with the shared goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Moreover, Barr expressed a keen interest in engaging in public diplomacy activities. He indicated his willingness to participate during future visits by senior Vietnamese leaders to Australia, highlighting the depth of commitment to fostering stronger bilateral ties. This openness to dialogue and collaboration underscores the growing importance of Vietnam as a strategic partner for the ACT.
