Thailand is poised to enhance its economic competitiveness by accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), a move that experts say is crucial for boosting productivity across various sectors. At a recent forum in Bangkok, leaders highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between the government, academia, and the business community to effectively integrate AI into Thailand’s economy.
Deputy Prime Minister and Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat emphasized the importance of focusing on areas where Thailand can develop specialized technological capabilities. Instead of competing with larger economies in mass production, the country should leverage its strengths in agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental technology. These sectors, rich in valuable local data, present significant opportunities for AI development.
Yodchanan underscored the pivotal role of education in Thailand’s AI strategy. He called for a greater emphasis on mathematics, science, and systems thinking, along with fostering skills in creativity and entrepreneurship. As technology evolves, he advocated for lifelong learning, reskilling, and upskilling to keep the workforce adaptable.
Business leaders also weighed in on the conversation. Bangkok Bank executive Kobsak Pootrakool noted that AI should be harnessed to improve productivity rather than being relegated to mere demonstration projects. He stressed the necessity of having reliable and well-organized data to ensure successful AI implementation. Kobsak also pointed out the increasing influence of automation, robotics, and AI in manufacturing, urging investment in technology, infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks.
Meanwhile, Jirayut Srupsrisopa, founder of Bitkub Capital Group, advocated for an AI-first approach throughout the economy. He highlighted how AI could address demographic and workforce challenges, thereby enhancing business productivity. The consensus among the panelists was clear: AI adoption must be underpinned by robust education systems, improved data infrastructure, effective regulation, and synergistic cooperation between public and private sectors to translate technological advancements into meaningful economic growth.
