Vietnam’s education system is set to benefit from a significant boost as Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng has prioritized the completion of essential infrastructure at newly opened boarding schools in remote border areas. This move aims to enhance educational access and quality for students in disadvantaged regions, addressing long-standing regional disparities.
During a meeting in Hà Nội, Prime Minister Hưng urged the Ministry of Education and Training to expedite the completion of facilities at 108 multi-level boarding schools that commenced operations on September 5. In addition, he set a target for the construction of 121 more schools, with a deadline for completion by August 30, 2027. These efforts are part of a broader initiative under Politburo Resolution 71-NQ/TW, which seeks to improve educational opportunities in border communes through a network of 248 boarding schools.
To ensure the success of these educational institutions, Hưng emphasized the need for thorough assessments of their effectiveness and educational quality. He called for adequate provision of classrooms, teachers, and resources, as well as the strategic use of enrolment data to plan future educational facilities. This strategic focus aims to provide a more equitable learning environment for students across the country.
Another pressing issue addressed during the meeting was the nationwide shortage of textbooks, which has impacted students’ learning experiences. Prime Minister Hưng instructed the education ministry to rectify the shortage of approximately 776,000 textbook sets by September 25. He identified weaknesses in demand forecasting, ordering, publishing, and distribution as contributing factors to the shortage and demanded accountability by October 10.
In response to these challenges, Hưng advocated for a more diversified approach to textbook production and distribution, coupled with stronger quality controls. These measures are intended to ensure that students across Vietnam receive the educational materials they need, thus supporting their academic success and overall educational development.
