Thailand Cautions Cambodia: Avoid Digital Escalation in Border Dispute

by admin477351

Amid existing tensions over border disputes, Thailand has issued a caution that its diplomatic efforts to mend relations with Cambodia could be jeopardized if such issues continue to surface in international arenas. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow emphasized that Cambodia’s recurring criticisms against Thailand at global forums threaten to erode trust-building endeavors between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.

This warning came in response to remarks made by Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, during a UN Security Council session. Keo Chhea highlighted the humanitarian impact of historical border clashes, which have led to widespread civilian displacement, damage to homes and infrastructure, and harm to the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple, located in a contested border region, has long been a flashpoint in Thai-Cambodian relations.

Thailand countered Cambodia’s narrative, labeling it as one-sided and inconsistent with a mutual agreement reached in late 2025. This accord was designed to foster reconciliation and bolster confidence between the two countries, underscoring a commitment to move beyond past conflicts.

Despite the ongoing friction, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful dialogue. He affirmed the country’s support for resolving border issues through adherence to international law and existing ceasefire agreements, emphasizing a diplomatic approach to the long-standing tensions.

The border disputes, particularly around the Preah Vihear Temple area, have historically strained relations between Thailand and Cambodia. These tensions underscore the complexities of their bilateral relationship, with both nations navigating the challenges of maintaining peace and fostering cooperation, while addressing historical grievances that continue to linger.
