On September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội to strengthen bilateral ties and explore comprehensive cooperation in various sectors. This meeting marked Min Aung Hlaing’s first visit to Vietnam since assuming his new role. During the talks, Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s pursuit of stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth. In response, Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its rising influence on the regional and global stage, expressing a keen interest in learning from Vietnam’s development journey. He also assured Myanmar’s dedication to maintaining a solid friendship and extensive collaboration with Vietnam.
The leaders acknowledged the positive momentum in bilateral relations and committed to enhancing high-level exchanges and political trust. They emphasized the necessity of reviving critical cooperation mechanisms in trade, security, and defense. A significant focus was placed on defense and security, with both countries aiming to combat cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Plans were also made to boost military training, exchange programs for young officers, and collaboration on tackling non-traditional security challenges.
Economic cooperation emerged as another pivotal area, with both nations agreeing to explore avenues for boosting trade and revising existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese enterprises to invest in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. The discussion also covered enhancing infrastructure and air connectivity, with plans to restore direct flights and develop joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
On the regional front, Vietnam pledged to continue its collaborative efforts with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders underscored their commitment to resolving disputes peacefully, adhering to international law. Further strengthening their diplomatic ties, Hưng invited Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and to chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In a reciprocal gesture, the Myanmar president invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
