Vietnam Pursues Japanese Partnership for Advanced Technology Innovation

by admin477351

Vietnam is seeking to deepen its collaboration with Japan in strategic technology areas like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy, while also requesting enhanced support for workforce development. This initiative was the focus of discussions held on September 3 between Vietnamese science and technology officials and a Japanese delegation from Japan’s House of Representatives. The talks emphasized semiconductor research, artificial intelligence, energy technologies, personnel training, and the strengthening of business cooperation in these strategic sectors.

As part of the NEXUS joint research program, Vietnam and Japan are working together to co-fund semiconductor research, covering aspects such as chip design, advanced materials, supporting technologies, and manufacturing. Plans are underway to expand this cooperation beyond 2027. Additionally, Vietnam is seeking Japan’s support in developing sovereign AI capabilities and Vietnamese-language large language models. A joint working group from both countries is anticipated to convene in October to further technology transfer and enhance business connections within the semiconductor industry.

Vietnam has proposed turning the NEXUS program into an annual cooperative mechanism, broadening its scope to include AI, new materials, renewable energy, and biomedicine. The country also advocates for stronger business partnerships and increased training for highly skilled engineers and experts in these strategic technology fields. Japan has shown interest in Vietnam’s progress in semiconductor development, labor policies, and energy strategy, which includes plans to expand nuclear power capabilities.

In pursuing a diversified energy mix that incorporates conventional energy, renewables, and nuclear power, including small modular reactors, Vietnam acknowledges the substantial investment and skilled workforce required for its energy transition. The country has expressed hope that Japan will continue to be a vital partner in developing the necessary energy infrastructure to support its burgeoning high-tech industries.
