Vietnam and Japan have committed to enhancing their defense collaboration across several strategic areas, including military training, cybersecurity, defense industry advancement, United Nations peacekeeping missions, and post-war recovery activities. This decision was reached during a meeting in Hanoi, where Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang met with General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral defense ties and more effectively implementing existing cooperation agreements.

General Giang reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to boosting consultation and dialogue mechanisms and expanding cooperation among military branches. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in defense technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. According to Giang, the defense relationship has become a crucial component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. He also underscored Japan’s contributions in areas such as personnel training, defense industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery efforts. Giang called for increased scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defense personnel, particularly in science, engineering, and technology fields.

Japan is recognized as one of Vietnam’s key economic and strategic partners, with robust cooperation in trade, investment, development assistance, and labor exchanges. Defense cooperation has seen significant expansion, supported by regular policy dialogues and military consultations between the two countries. General Uchikura affirmed Japan’s commitment to bolstering defense ties with Vietnam and expressed support for enhancing cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, and cybersecurity, as well as healthcare services within the armed forces.

Both nations have agreed to maintain close coordination to further strengthen mutual trust, regional stability, and long-term strategic cooperation. Japan’s support in these areas is seen as instrumental in advancing Vietnam’s defense capabilities and contributing to broader regional security objectives. The mutual commitment to expanding defense collaboration marks a significant step in solidifying the partnership between Vietnam and Japan in the context of a rapidly evolving global security landscape.
